Ryberto's Burritos

Ryan Connelly came up with the logo and whole idea for Ryberto's Burritos.

Some of the back story on its inception and on Ryan's various Ryberto creations:

If interested in the Ryberto character Ryco (Ryan) has a Facebook group for him:

Ryan's old blog 'Project 840' also has Ryberto's Burritos things on it:
http://project840.blogspot.ca/

Did some of my own DIY takes on Ryberto's Burritos.  Here's the front of my creations.

First one started off with this Ebay purchase and stripped the front patch and made a Ryberto's 'R', and stripped the name off the back.

On the back cut out 'Ryberto's Burritos' in twill and sewed on.  Font used was Sancreek.

The next one I did was the white jersey.   Got a blank white jersey from Liquidation World.  The font I used for this jersey is also Sancreek.  Used ribbon from a fabric store for the stripes, tackle twill for the name and number, and the arm patch came from Ryan Connelly.  Here's the back.

The final Ryberto's jersey was originally an Ebay purchase.  Specialty day? or fan giveaway? of a Padres affiliate - Eugene Emeralds.  Here's a before shot when I had the burritos cut out but hadn't sewn anything on the jersey.  The font is Baron Black DB - I found a closer font to the '78 Padres one but liked this one better.  The front number font was a slightly modified Ornitons Serial-XBold to get it close to the number font already on the back.

For now I left the back as is.  Here's a pic:

Got a couple caps from the thrift store and couple online.   Added the Ryberto's 'R' logo.  Had to zig-zag twice around the letter, as near the bottom of the letter it would sometimes skip stitches.  Did one 'R' in the Sancreek font for the pinstriped hat
The first cap I did was the padres bell style hat.  Cut out some gold twill for the bell shape and took the top button (Squatchee) off another cap and switched it with the one originally on the brown cap.

Hockey Haiku

Quite a few years back stumbled onto a site called Hockey Haiku.
http://www.hockeyhaiku.com/

Decided to try making a few of my own; sent them to the author of the site but he wasn't really updating it much anymore.

On the Hockey Forum site there was a thread on Hockey Haiku so I added them there:
http://www.hockeyforum.com/hockeyforum-chit-chat/38921-hockey-haiku.html

My contribution is below:

here's a few i made up last night. first one "paraphrased" from Slapshot:

It took my quarter
Gimme grape or orange and
no stinkin' root beer.

thought puck was shot wide
heart races, sweat runs down brow
when post rings loudly

the puck, once spinning
now lays flat trapped motionless
under glove's mesh cage.

line of red is gone
straying forward picks cherries
now more plentiful

Daneyko D-Man
feels no need to play offense
patrols his own zone

Irbe the goalie
throw back to bygone era
still repairs own gear

HF Boards also has a thread on Hockey Haiku:

Of course, I went out and bought a copy of a little book on the subject:
Hockey Haiku: The Essential Collection by John Poch and Chad Davidson

Here's on review on the book:

Califonia Golden Sharks

Made this California Golden Sharks jersey a little while back.

Logo was created by RossTaylor.  It's a mash-up creation combining the California Golden Seals and the San Jose Sharks.  Think I first saw it on the Chris Creamer forum, but have also seen it posted in Icethetics, and Hockey Jersey Concepts.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRtWKnZH9PnPH4RN22vVh2x5qh12OAkq8UaO26beUcQgcgliGy-ctGgUdR39fi26aIQIG85709lPL-cSY73Yl8PLPM6D00H8d-SmqkBIpMA3lw2WxeLlyJ45B-9UWUrStp8tUicYjL-cI/s1600/RossTaylor-CaliforniaGoldenSharks.jpg

Originally got the jersey off Ebay.  It had an Azure Dynamics front crest and shoulder patches that I removed.  Left the two colour sewn on #27's on the back and sleeves.
If the striping of the jersey looks familiar it's the same style but different colours than the Sens 3rd jerseys used from 2008-2011.

Printed Ross's logo out and reproduced a template of it and made a tackle twill crest and sewed it on the jersey.

Here's the crest:

Hamilton Steelheads 3rd jersey?

Found a jersey on Ebay with the same striping pattern as the Hamilton Steelheads one.

Removed the crest on front but was a fair bit of glue residue left so I used some Goof Off to remove the majority of the residue.  Also removed the Concrete Pond front patch.  Left the back number and 'A' on as is.

Decided to use the fish from the shoulder crest of the actual Steelheads jersey as the main crest.  Was originally going to recreate the shoulder patch as a main crest with the gold shield like shape, but decided instead to just use the fish.  Scanned and made an enlarged photocopy of shoulder patch for template for the crest and went through my usual procedure for making the crest.
Here's the back of the crest.  You can see where I forgot to sew on the black eye shape before putting it on the jersey.

Sewed the crest on jersey and then sewed the black eye area I previously missed.

With the gold around the collar, jersey looks a little incomplete without gold anywhere else.  Could cover up the gold on the collar.  Maybe I could add a thin diagonal stripe or a add a variation of the 'STEEHEADS' that is diagonally across the lower section of the actual jersey.  Arm numbers with gold is another idea.  Thought of adding a shoulder patch, but haven't as of yet thought of a design I like for the shoulder patches - if I'm making it, it has to be fairly simple as embroidery would be the best way for very small detail and my couple attempts at hand embroidery sucked.  As the goalie in the crest of the actual jersey has a welding mask, was thinking of a welding mask or something to do with welding or steel working - sketched a few ideas but nothing I came up with really grabbed me.  Another idea would be to get a patch to do with the Department of Fisheries (or DFO or Fisheries and Oceans Canada as it is known now) as that Canadian Government department took over the team for a while in Season 2.  Another Possibility is an old Steelworkers Union patch.

In any case, the jersey is done - at least for the time being.

Power Play Hamilton Steelheads jersey

My jersey arrived in the mail today.  Purchased a jersey from Mr. Murdoch in St. Catherines, ON.  The jersey is a Hamilton Steelheads jersey from a television show from the late 90's called Power Play.  It originally was broadcast on CTV and the series lasted 2 seasons; it was also repeated years ago on Showcase.  Apparently it briefly played in the U.S. on UPN but was pulled after 2 episodes after it bombed there.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Play_%28TV_series%29

The best fan page on the show that I found that is still running is this one: http://www.g2creations.qc.ca/powerplay/.

A 1998 article from the film magazine "Take One" that the author has either quoted or has personally interviewed the producers of the show is online here: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Power+play%3a+putting+drama+on+ice.-a030155914

A Canadian online movie and tv guide has a brief description and review of the series: http://www.pulpanddagger.com/movies/p2_b.html#bot

If you are looking for the series on DVD or even VHS you are out of luck; none were made.  Tough to find even clips of the show.  A fan of the show made a video montage set to the Tragically Hip's song 'Fireworks'.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snvI_P7CfzE

I would say the most well known actors/personalities that were on the show were Don Cherry (Coach's conrner on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada), Gordon Pinsent (Due South and many others), and Al Waxman (King of Kensington, Cagney & Lacey, etc.).  Famous hockey players that made appearances as themselves in the show include Bobby Hull, Guy Lafleur, and Jean Beliveau.

Onto my jersey.
Here's some pics.

The show must have renumbered a previous jersey for the Kerensky one.  You can see some glue residue around the numbers. Most evident on the sleeve numbers.

[EDIT - Oct 24th - found complete series online on You Tube.  They were uploaded by 'Twee de bourg' 3 years ago.  Here's a link to the first part of the first episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5KhsyrO0BM ]

Here's a couple screen shots; first one a head shot of the player in the dressing room, others back of player on ice.

60 plus hockey games in Duluth: October 2013

My dad and most of the older guys from my Tuesday/Thursday afternoon hockey went down last week to Duluth to play a couple games on Monday and Tuesday.  Like last year they played a team from Minneapolis; in addition this year they played a game against a team from Duluth.  Lost the first game and won the second.  Think the age requirement was dropped to 60 plus in order to have enough players for all the teams involved.  Like last year the games were played in what looks like a very nice looking rink: Sill Arena at the Duluth Heritage Sports Arena.  Here's a shot of the game between Duluth and Minneapolis.

Here's a team pic of the Duluth team.

and here's the Minneapolis team.

If this mini tournament goes ahead next year they have a trophy they are going to repurpose for it.

Ball Hockey 2013 & other stuff

Haven't put anything up in the blog for quite a while.  Call it part not having much to put up (unless I put up something other than DIY jerseys or dug up some pics of some old ones), and being either sick, busy, and/or lazy.

Got some pics of this past summer's annual Ball Hockey game.  Very humid and hot that day at Charry Park in Thunder Bay.  Dave Scott, a man comfortable in goal, was goalie on one side.

With no other takers, I put on the pads on the other side either for the first 2 periods or game 1 of 2 (however it went down in the books).

A couple people had to leave after that intermission and a couple more filled in; my wife who doesn't play hockey replaced me in goal played a more stand up style and had a better GAA than I did (I had 10 goals against).  I performed a fair bit better when playing out for the last period of the game.  Dave Scott had 5 or 6 goals against after the 2nd period; not sure if this pic was taken at end of the 2nd period or a bit earlier.

A couple more pics from earlier on in the game.  One with a player about to shoot and one that may or may not have been a goal (I think that's the orange ball hockey ball just on top of my pad).

There were a couple team pics taken, but at this point it isn't known whose camera was used. I will post them if and when I see them.

Here's some pics of the Yothers crest I made and put on a jersey for the ball hockey game.

On a more recent event.  Last week my dad and a bunch of the over 60 guys went down to Duluth to play a couple games in a sort of mini tournament.  They played one game against a team from Minneapolis and one from a team from the Duluth area.  They lost the first game and won the second one.  I'll have to see if any pics were taken.

Also, made a rare appearance in goal last Thursday afternoon.  Wore the red, black and white striped German eagle jersey (and socks).  Stunk in up the first 10 minutes and switched from the dark to the white team after five quick goals.  Was a bit shaky at first for the white team but after some lucky saves, the turning point was a left pad kick save followed by a double stacked pad save the other way on the rebound and finished the play with a glove save while still down.  Got my head and body into the game and ended up with a shutout for the white side.

In addition, may have soon have some pics of a jersey I purchased.  Jersey is from a hockey television show from a little while back.  It should be arriving in the mail this coming week.
